Common Ants in Michigan
Michigan is home to a variety of ant species, each with different behaviors and nesting habits.
Carpenter Ant
Carpenter ants are one of the most concerning ants in Michigan. Unlike termites, they don’t eat wood—but they tunnel through it to create nests.
Carpenter ant infestations can damage wooden structures over time, especially in damp or decaying wood. These ants are larger than most other species and are often black or dark brown.
Pavement Ants
Pavement ants are small, dark ants commonly found around sidewalks, driveways, and foundations. They often enter homes in search of food.
You’ll typically see pavement ants traveling in long lines along floors, baseboards, or kitchen surfaces.
Odorous House Ant
Odorous house ants are tiny ants that release a strong, unpleasant smell when crushed. These ants are highly attracted to sugary foods and are one of the most common indoor ant species.
They are known for forming large colonies and can be difficult to eliminate without proper ant control.
Pharaoh Ants
Pharaoh ants are very small, light-colored ants that often infest homes, apartments, and commercial buildings. They can spread quickly and are known for forming multiple colonies.
Because of their size and nesting habits, they are especially difficult to control with DIY methods.
Little Black Ants
Little black ants are another common pest in Michigan homes. As their name suggests, they are small and black, often forming noticeable trails in kitchens and bathrooms.
They typically nest outdoors but will enter homes when searching for food.
Other Ant Species in Michigan
Other ants found in Michigan include:
- Acrobat ants
- Thief ants
- Citronella ants
- Allegheny mound ants
Occasional fire ants (rare in Michigan but possible)
Each species has different nesting habits, but all can become a pest problem when they invade homes.
