Ants

Facts, Behaviors, and Tips

Ants are the most common insect homeowners deal with, and “a few ants on the counter” almost always means a colony nearby, not a stray. This guide covers how to recognize the common types (they’re not all the same problem), why they get in, and which ones actually matter for stings or property.

What Does an Ant Look Like?

Ants share a recognizable structure across species:

  • Three body segments with a narrow “waist”
  • Elbowed antennae (a key tell vs. termites, which have straight antennae)
  • Six legs
  • Colors from light brown to black or reddish

The differences between species (size, whether they sting, whether they damage wood, how they’re controlled) are what actually matter.

Types of Ants

Only a handful of the thousands of ant species turn up around homes, and the type matters. Carpenter ants are a wood-damage concern; fire ants sting; odorous house ants are mostly a kitchen nuisance.

Why You’re Seeing Ants and Where the Colony Is

Ants are social insects. The ones you see are foraging workers following chemical trails back to a hidden nest found in soil near the foundation, under concrete, inside wood, or in wall voids. Visible ants are a small fraction of the colony, which is why wiping up the ones on the counter never solves the problem: the nest keeps producing more. Effective control means reaching the colony, not the trail.

Are Ants Harmful?

For most ant species the honest answer is no, they’re a nuisance, not a danger. The exceptions worth knowing:

  • Fire ants sting, and sting in groups; reactions range from painful welts to, for some people, a serious allergic response.
  • Carpenter ants don’t eat wood but nest in it, and over time an established colony can contribute to structural damage.
  • Some ants (e.g. pharaoh ants) can contaminate food and spread bacteria in sensitive settings.

Most ants you’ll encounter, though, are just persistent, not harmful.

How We Handle Ant Control

Effective ant control comes down to reaching the colony, not just the visible trail. That means identifying the species (control differs; fire ants, carpenter ants, and odorous house ants aren’t treated the same way), locating the nest, and treating at the source. Store-bought sprays kill the ants you see and often scatter the colony, which can make it worse; baiting and targeted treatment work the problem at the nest.

Ant FAQs

What causes ants to come inside?

Ants typically enter your home in search of food, water, or shelter. Foragers leave a pheromone trail serving as a highway for the rest of the colony when resources are found.

Are all ants harmful?

Some ants are harmful, but most are only a nuisance. Fire ants sting and carpenter ants can cause structural damage over time.

Do ants go away on their own?

No, ants do not go away on their own. Once resources are found, ant colonies will keep producing. The visible ants you see in your home are only a fraction of the colony.
