Cockroaches

Facts, Behaviors, and Tips

Cockroaches are among the most resilient — and most stubborn — household pests. They breed fast, hide well, and a few visible roaches usually means many more out of sight. This guide covers how to recognize them, why they’re so hard to clear, where the nest is, and the health concerns that make them more than a nuisance. Follow the links for your species, your area, and professional treatment.

How to Recognize a Cockroach

Cockroaches share a recognizable profile regardless of species:

  • Flat, oval bodies
  • Long, thin antennae
  • Six fast legs
  • Colors from light tan to dark reddish-brown
  • Some species have wings (not all fly)

The differences between species are what actually matter. Size, where they live, their behaviors, all play a part in how to control them.

Types of Cockroaches

Five species account for nearly all home infestations; and the type matters, because German roaches in a kitchen are a very different problem from American roaches from a drain.

Where Cockroaches Hide and Finding the Nest

A visible roach is rarely alone. Cockroaches shelter in warm, dark, humid spaces; behind and under appliances, inside cabinetry and wall voids, around plumbing, in basements and drains. A single sighting usually means a hidden harborage (a “nest”) nearby. Finding and treating that harborage is the difference between knocking down a few roaches and actually resolving an infestation.

Why Cockroaches Are So Hard to Clear

Cockroaches reproduce extremely fast, survive on very little, hide in places treatments don’t easily reach, and a population is usually far larger than what’s visible. This is why store-bought sprays and traps tend to knock down what you see without resolving the infestation; the hidden, reproducing population continues.

Are Cockroaches a Health Risk?

Unlike many household pests, cockroaches are a genuine health concern, not just a nuisance. They travel through drains, garbage, and decaying matter and can carry bacteria onto food-contact surfaces. They’re also a well-documented household allergen and asthma trigger. Their shed skins and droppings affect indoor air quality, which matters most in homes with children or anyone with respiratory sensitivity.

This is a large part of why cockroach infestations shouldn’t be left to run — the concern isn’t only the roaches you see.

How Cockroaches Are Controlled

Effective cockroach control means reaching the hidden, reproducing population; not just the visible roaches. That involves identifying harborage areas, treating the spaces roaches actually live in, and addressing the food and moisture drawing them. Sanitation helps but rarely resolves an established infestation on its own.

Cockroach FAQs

Why am I seeing cockroaches in my home?

Cockroaches are attracted to food, moisture, and shelter. They find their way into your home through small gaps looking for a good place to nest.

Are cockroaches dangerous?

Yes, according to the EPA, cockroaches can pose a dangerous health risk. They passively carry harmful bacteria that can spread disease and their eggs, feces, and shed body parts contain allergens that can trigger severe asthma attacks and allergic reactions.

Do cockroaches go away on their own?

No, cockroaches will not leave on their own. If left untreated, nests will grow and infestations will become worse.
